I don't mean we have different personalities into our teens and 20's, I mean like as a baby only a few months old, I never liked to be held by anyone. My brother as a baby would cry and cry until somebody picked him up and paid attention to him. Unless there was some environmental cause within the first couple of months being alive, the next best answer is genetic. While siblings are 99% the same, it's possible to have 1 with blond hair and 1 with red hair - noticeable variation from 1 gene.

I think that's more evidence against genetics than for it. You brother will have like 99 percent of his DNA in common with you. On the other hand, even though you the same parents and same household, because of the time difference, your experiences aren't 99 percent identical. Identical twins have a higher chance of sharing mental disorders in common but they don't always. 100 percent identical genes, some times one has a mental illness and the other doesn't.

I tend to think a lot of mental states are genetic since my behavior is drastically different from my brother's behavior. I never liked being touched, or hugged, or being talked to. I liked to be alone to do my own things. My brother is 3 years older, raised in the same house, by the same parents, and he is the exact opposite of me. He's very social, he loves going out, he loves meeting new people, and he perfectly fits the ADHD description (creative and energetic).

One tragic thing about bipolar is it's often misdiagnosed as major depression and anxiety in young people. A dear friend of mine was misdiagnosed for many years and had to take far too many medications that made things 100x worse. She'd self-mutilate when manic. She became agoraphobic and disconnected. It's really hard for her because of her scars. Once she got treated she started becoming like her old self. It was great, but fearing her taking her own life was horrible. I hope you stay well.
